Sam Raimi Directing World of Warcraft Film

Director Sam Raimi

Variety is reporting that Sam Raimi; the man who brought us the Evil Dead and Spider-Man films, has signed on to direct a film adaptation of World of Warcraft for WB.  This will be Raimi’s next project after Spider-Man 4, so don’t expect to see Warcraft on the big screen any time soon.  It’s exciting to imagine what Sam Raimi will do with high fantasy and a huge budget.

I love the convenient ignorance of the big Hollywood trade publications when it comes to video games.  The article hilariously implies that World of Warcraft has been around since 1994, and that Wrath of the Lich King is the newest expansion for the original Warcraft game.  Yes, I’m a dork.  We all know WoW has only been around since 2004, and they are actually referring to the RTS Warcraft: Orcs & Humans.  I also know that I really don’t care for the game, having played the 2 week trial and been very disappointed.  Personally, I don’t get the hype surrounding the massively multiplayer RPG.  However, I do know that like the Warcraft real time strategy games, so seeing that world brought to life on the big screen does have me excited.  I’ll just call it the Warcraft movie.  Clearly this is Warner Bros. attempt at a Hobbit-killer, since the two films will likely come out around the same time.

Sam Raimi has wanted to do a fantasy film for some time.  In fact he previously expressed interest in directing The Hobbit; prequel to Lord of the Rings, a position that eventually went to director Guillermo del Toro.  Raimi also recently acquired the film rights to Terry Goodkind‘s Sword of Truth novels and a series based on the books, Legend of the Seeker just finished its first season.  Raimi will finally get his shot to direct true high fantasy and play around in the Warcraft universe, should be interesting.
