On the latest episode of The Shelf, Film Editor Noah R. Taylor chats with Disney•Pixar director Domee Shi, a rising star at the legendary animation studio who also happens to have grown up in Toronto. Her short film Bao makes its theatrical debut alongside Incredibles 2 this weekend. Not only is Bao the first animated short from Pixar directed by a woman – it’s also the first Pixar film ever set in Canada!
We first spoke to Shi back in 2015 when she was a story artist on Inside Out. Earlier this week – and almost three years to the day – we had the chance to chat with Shi again to talk about Bao, its journey to the big screen, the importance of empowering women in the animation industry, her upcoming feature film, and, of course, what’s on her Dork Shelf.
And, as a special bonus, we close out the episode with our own Jason Gorber’s chat with Incredibles 2 director Brad Bird (which you can also watch here).
