Dork Shelf & GamerCamp Present JOY STICK HEROES: THE WIZARD AND THE LAST STARFIGHTER DOUBLE BILL

Dork Shelf & Gamercamp Present The Wizard and The Last StarfighterOne night only! On Nov. 14th, enjoy two nostalgic time capsules of early gaming culture. First, get ready to point out the impossibility of getting 50,000 points in Double Dragon in only a few minutes during the 1989 Fred Savage vehicle (and Super Mario Bros. 3 commercial) The Wizard, and then stick around to see an early foray in to …CG animation in the cult classic The Last Starfighter – a film that finally vindicates the educational value of video games. Both films on 35mm! $2 Discount for Gamer Camp Badge Holders (www.gamercamp.ca)! PRIZES!

Sunday, Nov. 14th

7pm – The Wizard

When Corey’s (Fred Savage*) brother Jimmy (Luke Edwards) doesn’t stop babbling about California and enacting Tetris metaphors with building block due to an emotional trauma, an impromptu road trip to a video game competition ensues in an attempt to rescue Jimmy from being put into an institution. All the while Beau Bridges, Christian Slater and a sleazy bounty hunter in hot pursuit.

Sure its a glorified commercial for Super Mario 3, but what a wonderfully earnest and often unintentionally hilarious commercial it is! Starring the immortal dialogue exchange of “I love the Power Glove… It’s so bad…”

*Wait… Fred Savage plays a kid named Corey and his brother Ben plays a kid named Corey in the TV show Boy Meets World? Mind blown!

9:15pm – The Last Starfighter

When Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) achieves a high score on his favorite arcade game Starfighter, he is identified by an intergalactic alien organization as the ideal candidate to lead their fighters into battle against one of those evil empires – the kind that are into the whole “ruling the universe” game. An early benchmark for computer generated effects in Hollywood (coming two years after TRON) that finally proved to parents everywhere that gaming does teach you some valuable skills – like how to save the universe. Directed by famous slasher film serial killer Michael Myers (aka Nick Castle).

Tickets:
$8 (Single Ticket)
$14 (Double Bill)
($2 discount with GamerCamp Badge)

Its all happening at the Toronto Underground Cinema (186 Spadina Ave.)
