First Zoolander 2 Trailer is Really, Really, Ridiculously Good Looking

OK, fine. I might be overstating things because I really wanted to use that headline. But the first trailer for Zoolander 2 (2oolander?) does look decent and at least seems to capture the tone of the original. The new movie reunites Ben Stiller’s Derek Zoolander with Owen Wilson’s Hansel, and the two paragons of masculine aesthetics remain as well intentioned and dim-witted as ever.

They’re also a little older and are finally starting to realize that the world of fashion has moved on without them. Derek and Hansel are yesterday’s top models (Benedict Cumberbatch is the next one), but their services are required when someone sets out to assassinate all of the world’s most beautiful people (pour one out for Justin Bieber). That isn’t the sort of thing they’d normally handle except for the fact that all of them died with Zoolander’s signature Blue Steel emblazoned on their faces. Penelope Cruz plays their secret agent liaison, while Will Ferrell reprises his role as a not-so-prison-hardened Mugatu.

Of course, the trailer is relentlessly dumb, and it’s possible – perhaps even likely – that the sequel will fail to live up to its predecessor. But the original Zoolander was far funnier and more incisive than it had any right to be, partly because it was so gleefully self-aware about how stupid the whole endeavor was. Zoolander 2 would appear to have the same DNA – I rather enjoyed watching Hansel throw heavy objects at Derek’s face – so I’ll hold out hope for the upcoming comedy.

Zoolander 2 hits theatres on February 12.
