Shenmue III has seen better days. After the fiasco at E3, it comes as no surprise that Ys Net and publisher Deep Silver are retreading on a decision that pissed off fans across the world. At E3, Yu Suzuki revealed that Shenmue III would be an Epic Store exclusive on PC, this comes after many people backed the game on Kickstarter and expected a key on Steam. Then, to really piss off backers, the Shenmue III team said no refunds on keys and that only an Epic Store key would be provided.
It went downhill from here.
“Thank you very much for contacting us,” says the official response from Ys Net. “The launch was previously planned for distribution on Steam, however, it was decided together with Deep Silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.”
“Shenmue III will be distributed through the Epic Games Store and will require the Epic Games Store Client to activate. We apologize for the sudden change in platform, however, refunds will not be granted for this change. We thank you for your support and look forward to delivering the Shenmue experience fans everywhere have been waiting so long for.”
One month later and the stance on refunds seemingly has switched and those who backed on PC will receive a refund.
From the developer’s perspective, I understand why they want to move to Epic Store as Epic Games only takes a 12% cut, whereas Steam takes 30%. This is why so many exclusives are launching on the Epic Store platform before coming to Steam: more profits. From backer’s perspective, this is more based on principles.
In response to the negative feedback, the solution to the problem is below:
a. PC Physical: Package (Disc) ＋ EGS Key
b. PC Digital: EGS Key
c. PS4 Physical: Package (Disc)
d. PS4 Digital: PSN Voucher Code
*If selecting either the PC Physical or PC Digital version, an option to also receive a Steam key one year later will be available. Backers must manually select this option in the survey to receive the Steam key.
**If you had previously selected PC and want to change to PS4 or vice versa, you may do so.
Along with Deep Silver and Epic Games, we have agreed that should the above proposal not be acceptable to backers, refund requests will be honoured.
Details concerning the refund request process will be announced in the following update. We ask for your patience until that time.
*In the case rewards within your reward tier, such as in-game content, have already been created and implemented, a full refund may not be possible.
