Discovery
A stellar coming-of-age film, Andrew Cividino’s pitch perfect look at adolescence in Northern Ontario is already in line to be one of the best Canadian films of the year.
The film’s even more astonishing when you realize it’s a debut – as a character study it manages to be both measured and loose, following three boys (Nick Serino, Reece Moffett and Jackson Martin) as they spend a summer getting into trouble.
The film echoes innumerable films with similar themes, yet manages to deftly craft both story and character that are superior to almost all of them. The unpolished performances seem almost documentary like, yet the sweeping cinematography and heightened drama take on a kind of mythic tale within the grand setting.
A tremendous accomplishment, Sleeping Giant made a splash when it debuted at Cannes and could easily become a sleeper hit at TIFF.
