TAD 2014: The ABCs of Death Review

The ABCs of Death 2

Anthology films are a tough sell on the best of days no matter the genre, but at least ABC’s of Death 2 is a marked step up from the first installment, with more of the best and brightest talents that horror has to offer on board.

From A to Z, 26 different directors from across the globe and are given free range to tell any story that inspired them as long as it dealt with death.  It’s hard to genuinely put a rating on an anthology film, but there’s a better ensemble of storytellers here with far fewer weak links then the first installment.

ABCs of Death 2

Kicking off with a morbidly humorous entry from director EL Katz (Cheap Thrills) in the letter A, the weirdness and the insanity gets going at a pretty good clip. Directors like Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (Big Bad Wolves, delivering a unique statement on the futility of war), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead, with a lighthearted entry about a couple of guys on a deserted island), and directors of past TAD hits Steven Kostanski (Manborg, with one of the film’s most deliriously inspired entries). Chris Nash’s particularly great closing short will also be the one most people probably talk about long after the anthology ends.

It won’t please everyone (and, quite frankly anthology, films never do), but ABC’s of Death 2 does more right than wrong and should make for a hell of a fun screening. (Dave Voigt)
