To wrap up the week, we talk about some places in Toronto where you can get together to watch the Oscars tomorrow, we look ahead to next week's Canadian Screen Awards, we look at two TIFF Bell Lightbox series about books and food on film, and talk a little bit about how TIFF's Paul Verhoeven retrospective is just starting to get really good.
One third of the Sylvester Stallone/Arnold Schwarzenegger team up Escape Plan is a decent popcorn action flick. The other two thirds are fairly abysmal. Fortunately, the good section is the middle hour of the film, meaning it’s a perfect film to watch on TV right after you missed the opening 30 minutes and right before you have to take off to be somewhere.
Enter for a chance to win one of ten pairs of passes to an advance screening of Escape Plan - starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger - on Thursday, October 17th in Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, or Vancouver, courtesy of Dork Shelf and eOne Films.
In this month's round-up of the best in home entertainment we look at wartime classic The Great Escape, the little known Sam Raimi/Coen Brothers team-up Crimewave, the criminally underrated Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle The Last Stand, Jackie Chan's Police Story films, the cult favourite Repo Man, Spalding Gray's Swimming to Cambodia, and Godard's Band of Outsiders.
It's gleefully over the top, but The Last Stand easily stacks up nicely side by side with Arnold Schwarzenegger's best work, marking a true return to form for the long missing action hero.
This week at the video store we look at the winning animated adventure ParaNorman, the action blockbuster The Expendables 2, the dance-stravaganza Step Up Revolution, the crap-stravaganza The Apparition, and a pair of films that missed theatrical releases despite being directed by Joe Dante and Amy Heckerling.
Does shit blow up? Yes. Does everyone get at least one good scene to showcase their talents? Yes. Is it better than the first film? Yes, and by quite a bit actually.
Enter for a chance to win one of ten pairs of passes to see the Canadian premiere of The Expendables 2 in Toronto on Monday, August 13th with co-stars Terry Crews and Randy Couture in attendance, courtesy of Dork Shelf and Alliance Films.

Conan the Barbarian is an unnecessary, but often entertaining adaptation of Robert E. Howard's series of stories about the Cimmerian warrior who was "born of battle." And to the film's credit, it doesn't feel like a full remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger take on the character. This Conan is actually smarter and even more action packed than the beloved films from the 80s, but under the direction of Marcus Nispel sometimes the film can be excessive even by the standards of the character.
Thanks to Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, the action film reached its height in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It was a world where a man could battle an army of terrorists single-handedly and not only survive, but slaughter them all; where a man could fire forty rounds from his hand gun—while […]
Conan the Barbarian is well known for its hilarious lines and great action, but the film is also known for its wonderful musical score courtesy of the amazing Basil Poledouris. However, Jon and Al over at JonandAl.com found the Poledouris score lacking and decided to add lyrics to the mix. I give you Arnold Schwarzenegger […]
With the recent announcement of the Robert Rodriguez produced sequel/reboot of the Predator franchise, Premiere Magazine went back and took a look at the film that started it all. They learned that the original Predator isn’t just a movie featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in top form, or even an above average 1980’s action film. No, Premiere […]
MTV Movies Blog has confirmed that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be appearing in the upcoming Terminator Salvation in some capacity. Whether the Governator will appear in the flesh, or only lend his likeness and voice to the T-800 cyborg he has portrayed in the three previous Terminator films, the nature of his cameo appearance is still […]
