To wrap up the week, we talk about some places in Toronto where you can get together to watch the Oscars tomorrow, we look ahead to next week's Canadian Screen Awards, we look at two TIFF Bell Lightbox series about books and food on film, and talk a little bit about how TIFF's Paul Verhoeven retrospective is just starting to get really good.
One third of the Sylvester Stallone/Arnold Schwarzenegger team up Escape Plan is a decent popcorn action flick. The other two thirds are fairly abysmal. Fortunately, the good section is the middle hour of the film, meaning it’s a perfect film to watch on TV right after you missed the opening 30 minutes and right before you have to take off to be somewhere.
In this month's round-up of the best in home entertainment we look at wartime classic The Great Escape, the little known Sam Raimi/Coen Brothers team-up Crimewave, the criminally underrated Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle The Last Stand, Jackie Chan's Police Story films, the cult favourite Repo Man, Spalding Gray's Swimming to Cambodia, and Godard's Band of Outsiders.
It's gleefully over the top, but The Last Stand easily stacks up nicely side by side with Arnold Schwarzenegger's best work, marking a true return to form for the long missing action hero.
This week at the video store we look at the winning animated adventure ParaNorman, the action blockbuster The Expendables 2, the dance-stravaganza Step Up Revolution, the crap-stravaganza The Apparition, and a pair of films that missed theatrical releases despite being directed by Joe Dante and Amy Heckerling.
Does shit blow up? Yes. Does everyone get at least one good scene to showcase their talents? Yes. Is it better than the first film? Yes, and by quite a bit actually.

Conan the Barbarian is an unnecessary, but often entertaining adaptation of Robert E. Howard's series of stories about the Cimmerian warrior who was "born of battle." And to the film's credit, it doesn't feel like a full remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger take on the character. This Conan is actually smarter and even more action packed than the beloved films from the 80s, but under the direction of Marcus Nispel sometimes the film can be excessive even by the standards of the character.
