Nug & Cymek Review The New 52

Publisher DC Comics recently made the bold decision to relaunch their comic book universe in an effort to make their comic books more "modern and accessible". Dubbed "The New 52", the rebooted universe offers a fresh start for iconic superheroes and lesser known characters alike with all 52 titles being renumbered to #1. It's a major event, which is why local DC Comics fans Nug Nahrgang and Andrew Cymek are planning to review EVERY single issue of "The New 52" through their first story arcs.

Fan Expo Interviews:
Wes Craig & Shane Davis

In honour of DC Comics' much touted Fall relaunch, we figured it would be best to kick off our post-Fan Expo coverage with some interviews related to storied publisher, namely, artists Shane Davis and Wes Craig.

First Man of Steel Image

It’s a spider-man! It’s an iron man! No, it’s a super man! Earlier today Warner Bros. released the first image of Superman from Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel slated for a 2013 release. The image shows Henry Cavill as the titular 'Man of Steel' showing off the squareness of his jaw in a suit that replaces the vintage spandex look with the recycled basketball one people seem to really like these days.

Flashpoint #1 Review

DC's summer super-event, Flashpoint has both the fun of an alternate reality tale and the reward of a continuity storyline. Written by Geoff "I am DC" Johns, with stunning artwork by Andy Kubert, the first issue is largely spent setting up this previously unseen ”˜world’. And what a world they have crafted! Though I'm more a fan of Green Lantern than of The Flash, this event looks to be far more exciting... and dare I pun ”˜fast paced’, than Blackest Night or Brightest Day .

Batman Incorporated #4 Review

Grant Morrison’s Batman Incorporated explodes in issue #4! One of the two titles featuring the returned Bruce Wayne, I found the previous three issues to be incredibly weak. Thankfully that all changes with issue #4.

Xombi #1 Review

Xombi #1 was a surprise for me. An awesome surprise! My random pick from the comic shelf, the art just grabbed my attention, being almost Baroque in its richness and visual impact. I was, and to a certain extent still am, unfamiliar with the character, but that didn't prevent me from enjoying creator John Rozum’s new take on this formerly languishing DC Comics character.

Power Girl #21 Review

Style over substance. That is the typical first reaction when someone mentions the Power Girl title. Or, thoughts of cheesecake art that hangs on skeleton thin plotlines. This is not the case though.

All-Star Superman Review

All-Star Superman is DC's newest animated feature and drops today on Blu-ray and DVD; it follows the storyline set out by the comic book of the same name. Released between November 2005 to October 2008, All-Star Superman gave us the quintessential Superman story - there were elements from every part of his mythos, and it was all tied together by one overarching plot point: Superman is dying, and needs to come to terms with his mortality.

The Flash #9 Review

DC Comics’ dynamic cover campaign strikes again! I picked up this month's issue of The Flash based entirely on the phenomenal cover by local artist Francis Manapul. I’m not entirely sure why I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the issue, but it is a great read. This reallyshouldn’t have come as a surprise to me, given the creative team involved.
