TIFF 2022: Biosphere Review

Director Mel Eslyn’s Biosphere was a surprise late add to the TIFF line-up just days before the official start of this year’s festival. With only two public screenings, audiences were asked, nay, begged, not to give away any of the plot’s details because, as it turns out, simply describing what the film is about is a huge spoiler.

The Overnight Review

Once gain the Duplass brothers have brought us something original and fresh. The Overnight might not be the biggest movie of the summer, but it's easily the funniest thus far.

Tammy Review

Melissa McCarthy’s first project as producer, writer, and star will most likely flop, but it’s not the abysmal failure than its curiously quiet dumping over the Fourth of July holiday in the States would suggest.

Black Rock Review

Made by people not generally associated with making intense psychological thrillers, Black Rock stands out as a true hidden gem this weekend. A progressive and bone chilling survival drama with a trio of strong female leads, actress and director Katie Aselton teams with frequent collaborator and screenwriter Mark Duplass (Cyrus, Jeff, Who Lives at Home) for a lean and mean revenge flick that stays true to the mumblecore duo’s roots while delivering the genre goods.

People Like Us Review

Obnoxious, absurd, and sentimentalized to the point that could even Hallmark greeting card writers vomit, People Like Us wastes of the talent of the people who made it and the time of the people unfortunate enough to watch it.

This Week in DVD: 6/19/12

This week on video store shelves, Phil Brown stays home with Jeff, Who Lives at Home before developing Wanderlust, while heads out west to deal with zombies in Exit Humanity and Christian Slater in Dawn Rider before returning home to wreck the place with Project X Also, a few words about the now cancelled Canadian cult series Being Erica and the intriguing family documentary My Reincarnation.

Safety Not Guaranteed Review

Despite some narrative messiness and a somewhat miscast leading lady, the supporting cast, winning script and tone help make Safety Not Guaranteed rise above the trappings of a standard indie comedy.

Interview: Jake Johnson

We talked to current New Girl television sensation Jake Johnson about his role in the indie time travel/internet meme comedy Safety Not Guaranteed, how to create a sympathetic jerk, and why he thinks the film is a perfect summer movie.

Summer Movie Preview: June Part One

Of all the months this summer, June has become so stacked that we had to divide our summer movie preview up into two parts! Today, we take a look at Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, Magic Mike, That's My Boy, Safety Not Guaranteed, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation!

Jeff, Who Lives at Home Review

We've all known people like the titular character of the Jay and Mark Duplass' Jeff, Who Lives at Home. Nice guys who mean well, but for whatever reason are going nowhere fast. The film suffers from a few of the same maladies that afflict its main character. At times the film feels like an aimless collection of circumstances and encounters because, well, it is precisely that. It's a meandering tale that doesn't really accomplish much in the telling.
