TIFF makes a big and bold swing with today’s announcement of the Galas and Special Presentations for this year’s festival. The slate includes the world premiere of the Canadian racing drama Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend as the closing night Gala. The film by Yan Lanouette Turgeon tells the story of racing star Gilles Villeneuve.

Other Canadian content includes Michael Dowse’s The Stunt Driver starring Jay Baruchel as crazy Canuck Ken Carter. The stuntman made a daring attempt to jump the St. Lawrence River in a rocket car.

Today’s announcement includes a healthy dose of A-list talent, so TIFF-goers will definitely want to confirm their celebrity sex passes before September 10. The star-studded slate includes Andrew Scott in Elsinore, Simon Stone’s drama about late actor Ian Charleson as he takes the stage for one last swing at Hamlet being AIDS claims his life. Scott’s performance as Charleson should be one to watch for the People’s Choice Award race as the late actor’s biggest credit, Chariots of Fire, scored the prize before heading on to Oscar glory, as did Hamnet last year for star Jessie Buckley.

Also bringing star power is Jessie Eisenberg’s The Debut starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder with Helen Mirren, the aptly titled Everyone Wants to F*** Me with Taron Egerton, Andrew Haigh’s A Long Winter with Kit Connor and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick in Lauren Milller Rogen’s Babies, Amanda Seyfried in Tim Blake Nelson’s The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd, Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans in John Madden’s Onwards and Sideways, Sylvester Stallone (dramatized by Anthony Ippolito) in Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky, and Florian Zellner’s The Bunker with Penélope Cruz. The latter star does double duty with Cannes winner La Bola Negra, the Javis’ sweeping gay epic, which like Elsinore, marks a notable presence for queer cinema in the line-up.

La Bola Negra also leads a robust crop of Cannes titles making North American premieres or Canadian premieres in Toronto. These Croisette hits include Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord with Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, Lukas Dhont’s return to TIFF with Best Actor winner Coward, Ryūsuke Hamachi’s Best Actress winner All of a Sudden, and Jordan Firstman’s breakout Club Kid.

TIFF will announce additional titles throughout the next two weeks. These films join previously unveiled opening night film Being Heumann and last week’s five-title drop.
