Scandinavian filmmaker Joachim Trier, whose Oslo, August 31st caused a bit of a storm when released back in 2011, returned to Cannes this year with Louder than Bombs. This rich character piece serves as Trier’s English debut and it’s quite the transition. The stellar cast includes Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Ryan and newcomer Devin Druid.
The story of a family broken apart by a mother’s death never feels maudlin or manipulative. Through a series of flashbacks the film manages to provide a rich and detailed portrait of the family. Yes, the revealed secrets are telegraphed pretty heavily, but the rich performances and strong direction make up for some of the more overt aspects of the storytelling. With a lovely visual palate and strong score by Force Majeure’s Ola Fløttum this is a terrific Nordic drama that’s lost none of its chilly bite while being brought to a wider audience.
