Being Human - Sam Huntington, Sam Witwer and Meaghan Rath

So a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost walk into a bar… No, that’s not the beginning of a lame dad joke, that’s the premise of SPACE’s supernatural dramedy Being Human. Okay, more like a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost move into a house together and hilarity/shenanigans/brutal killings ensue.

A remake of an acclaimed British series, Being Human centres around brooding (aren’t they always?) vampire Aidan (Sam Witwer, Battlestar Galactica, Smallville) and his nerdy newbie werewolf friend Josh (Sam Huntington, Fanboys). Hospital workers by day and monsters by night, both struggle with keeping their primal urges in check and blending in with their human counterparts. When the two move into a new apartment they discover that it is already occupied by yet another ghoul – a bubbly yet lonely ghost named Sally (Meaghan Rath, 15/Love).

Obviously Being Human features plenty of blood and perilous situations, but it also features some weighty emotions. Josh is still adjusting to his condition and to living apart from his family, who he avoids out of shame. Aidan may be an old vampire, but he’s still learning how to cope without live human blood. Their ghost roommate Sally died after purchasing the house with her fiancé and is now gripped by loneliness and isolation. This series is about not being able to fit in with or be understood by the people around you, which is something most dorks should be familiar with.

Much like True Blood this show has a dash of campy self-awareness and even gives a nod to the Twilight-ness of its premise. Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of ‘amedy’ in this dramedy, meaning the jokes aren’t very funny. However it does feature some pretty good cliff-hanger endings, a solid cast and great soundtrack that includes home-grown Canadian talent like Wintersleep & Royal Wood.

Rumour is that it doesn’t live up to the original, but you should probably tune-in and take a bite of it yourself.

Being Human premieres tonight on SPACE at 10:00PM ET and SyFy at 9:00PM ET.
