Doctor Who Season 6 Trailer

The new season of Doctor Who begins in a little over two weeks on April 23. I don't think I've quivered with this much anticipation since the new series began five or so years ago. I went into the last season with mixed feelings. I had full confidence in new head writer Stephen Moffat, but was worried about the loss of David Tennant. All I can say now is, David who (yes, pun intended)?

Moebius: Transe-Forme Exhibit in Paris

If you find yourself in or around Paris, France between now and March 13th, I am extremely jealous of you. There is a very special art exhibition taking place at the Fondation Cartier. The spectacular exhibit, titled Moebius: Transe-Forme, is an expansive collection of the work of vaunted comics illustrator, cartoonist and artist Jean Giraud, also known as Moebius.

Dredd Adds Lena Headey

Director Pete Travis’s (Vantage Point) next theatrical venture, Dredd, just welcomed another cast member to the upcoming comic reboot. The Playlist confirms that Lena Headey (300, Game of Thrones) will be playing the main antagonist in the film. Dredd is based on the popular British comic book character Judge Dredd, created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra.

Interview
David Blue
of Stargate Universe

We caught up with Stargate Universe actor David Blue at Fan Expo this year and were very pleased to discover that he more than lives up to his character's dorky reputation. Blue plays resident geek Eli Wallace on the sci-fi series, helping to save the Destiny with his genius and dropping delightfully nerdy references in a charming, yet slightly inept attempt to lighten the mood of his fellow space castaways.

Monsters Review

Horror and science fiction genres have long been used as metaphors for problems and issues of the real. Our fear of the dark, our concerns over long wars, issues of poverty and strife, and our possible demise can be explored in many ways more readily through genre film. With that in mind, science fiction films […]

Splice Review

There is a moment near the end of Splice when you see the creature in all its frightening glory, this odd hybrid with just enough human to have won your empathy for the majority of the film, and it is about to exact its revenge for mistreatment, when you finally understand what Mary Shelley was […]

Doctor Who in Review

When the BBC announced five years or more ago that they would be remounting the classic Doctor Who series, I was both thrilled and scared. I was raised on British television, and Doctor Who was always my favourite. While it has its ups and downs, I longed to be the Doctor (never the companion – […]

The first trailer for the Nimród Antal directed, Robert Rodriguez produced sci-fi actioner Predators has hit the web. Starring Adrien Brody (The Pianist, The Village) and Topher Grace (In Good Company, Spider-Man 3), the film is a true sequel to the original Predator films in tone as well as spirit. Let’s put those loathsome Alien […]

Sitges ’09 Reviews Part Two: Doghouse, Macabre, Heartless

To see Shelagh’s first batch of  reviews from the 2009 Sitges Film Festival, including Splice, Amer, Cargo and TiMER be sure to click here. Probably the best night I had at Sitges was not at a film, but at a party (like all good festivals, the parties are great). This one was set up by […]

Sitges ’09 Reviews Part One: Splice, Amer, Cargo, TiMER

Last February when on holiday in Spain, I was fortunate enough to meet Mike Hostench, co-director of Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya, the largest fantastic film festival of Europe and one of the largest and most important in the world. His enthusiasm convinced me to attend the festival last month. Believe me, […]

District 9 Review

2009 has been an incredible year for science fiction films.  Duncan Jones’ impressive Moon and James Cameron’s super-hyped Avatar can consider themselves in extremely good company with District 9.  Director Neill Blomkamp has a very bright future ahead of him. Based on Blomkamp’s short film Alive in Joburg, District 9 is quite simply one of […]

Moving Up: Exclusive with Defying Gravity’s Dylan Taylor

From commercial funny man (pepsi,  pizza pops, bud light), to movie slow poke (Tideland,  Charlie Bartlett), to the biggest House Party animal in last year’s under-performing (though not without its moments) original Comedy Network series, Toronto actor Dylan Taylor has been on the up and up for a few years now. You could even say […]
