It’s that time of year again, moviegoers. The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were announced this morning, and, perhaps predictably, One Battle after Another and Hamnet came out of the gate swinging, with the former scoring a total of 13 nods, and the latter ending up with eight. But it was Ryan Coogler’s Sinners that made history. The film received 16 nominations and broke the previous daunting record for Oscar nods set by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. From Coogler’s Best Director nomination, to acting nods for Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku, to Sound and Editing and Original Song nods, the divine horror allegory dominated across the board.

In addition to the three previously mentioned titles, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value all held their own with nine nominations, while KPop Demon Hunters gave fans a reason to cheer with nods in both Original Song and Feature Animation categories. This year’s nominations also included a long-overdue new category, Best Casting, which likely helped Sinners clear the previous high bar of 15 nominations. Some notable surprises among this morning’s announcements included: Delroy Lindo possibly nabbing Paul Mescal’s spot in the Best Supporting Actor category; Wicked: For Good being completely shut out of any nods, even for original songs; Train Dreams scoring in several prestigious categories; and F1 sneaking into the Best Picture race.

But what of the Can-con in this year’s race? Thanks to the Best Animated Feature category, the directors of Elio and KPop Demon Hunters, Domee Shi and Maggie Kang, stand a chance of taking home a statuette. There’s also the stop-motion gem The Girl Who Cried Pearls by Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, which earned a nod for Best Animated Short film. Not to mention honorary Canadian Guillermo del Toro’s nominations for Frankenstein, which includes the Canadian makeup and hairstyling, as well as production design teams.
